Insider Information: Wildtracks

1It’s cold, wet, frosty and muddy this time of year so what’s the best thing to do to keep amused? OK, you win, what’s the second best thing? How about getting together with a group of mates and just getting downright
dirty. No that’s not what I meant, I was referring to an adventure day driving all types of vehicles, not just karts but big stuff as well. It just so happens that I have recently visited Wildtracks at Newmarket in Suffolk who have a variety of off-road vehicles and a rapidly expanding kart circuit.
So what’s on offer? Wildtracks is situated in 60 acres featuring a dedicated off-road 4×4 driving course, a military vehicle driving range and custom built tracks and circuits for motocross, supermotos, quads, rallycross and of course karting. There is also clay pigeon, laser target shooting and archery.

The Wildtracks’ menu features Adventure Days held on the first Sunday of every month offering an informal and flexible ‘open house’ format for families and groups to participate in a wide range of activities. Suitable for all ages and abilities, an adventure day can be tailored to suit most budgets and activities are available on a turn up and ride basis providing a taste of what is normally only available to large corporate parties.
Quad bikes are available in sizes for adults and children and with dedicated courses, some are designed to be more challenging than others but all are a great introduction to off-road driving

There are four main 4×4 areas around the park linked by woodland trails. All skill levels are catered for with experienced off-road instructors available for tuition. The amphibious military Hagglund provides a rough, tough ride with hills, bunkers and water features to negotiate. A permanent, championship standard, sand based motocross circuit is also on site. Capable of being used in all weather conditions, Wildtracks is the venue for regular practice and club race days. There is also a junior motocross circuit and a beginner’s track available. The 700 metre dedicated tarmac kart circuit is available for entertainment, race meetings, arrive and drive and open practice days. At the moment it is a non-MSA circuit although race meetings are attracting an increasing number of drivers every month. Classes include Honda, Comer and WTP Cadet, Minimax, Junior MAX, Senior Rotax 177 and TKM Extreme with an entry fee of £40. Meetings are held on the third weekend of every month. Full corporate facilities are also available and a new fleet of Biz karts is ready to be let loose on the fast flowing circuit.

To give you an idea of the circuit a Junior MAX time is approximately 27 seconds. There is limited overtaking, especially for the corporate karts which are flat out on most of the track. With this in mind and with so much
space available, ‘big boss man’ Simon Smith is planning to extend the circuit in the near future, making it between 1000 and 1200 metres in length. This will give plenty of scope to include tighter sections for overtaking and hopefully stop the ‘death wish lunges’ that can cause chaos on any circuit. The track itself is wide enough for any class of kart with safe, wide run off areas already in place. There’s also so much pit area you could build another kart circuit!
That gives you an insight into Wildtracks, already a venue to visit, but when the kart circuit is extended it will definitely be a circuit in demand owing to its good location and facilities that are constantly being upgraded, including a kart shop, and the other driving activities that can be used.
