ON THIS DAY… Joe Turney – Throwback Thursday

9th June 2016

Joe Turney finished 5th in the East Anglian Cup at Kimbolton in the Cadet Libre class finishing 8.59 seconds behind the leader.

In a field of 20 drivers Joe was classified dead last after a DNS in qualifying leaving him on the back foot for the heat and Pre Final. Things got worse in the heat as Joe found himself with a DNF leaving him last for the Pre Final.

At the start of the Pre Final it looked like Joe’s luck had changed as he moved up into the top 10 straight away, but yet again he would not finish the race leaving him plum last for the Final.

However, Joe certainly saved the best till last as he went on to gain fifteen places in the final to finish an outstanding 5th place. Better still his best lap was just 0.13 off the fastest lap set by Owen Byatt.

Winning that day was Ronan Quinn with Cole Atkins 2nd, Bradley White 3rd and Tony Stephenson 4th.

Since then Joe has come on a huge amount and can now call himself one of the best this country has to offer!

In 2014 Joe finished 14th in the LGM Series and 10th in Super One, both in the IAME Cadet class. Then in 2015 he finished 5th in the Mini Max class and 3rd at Kartmasters. We tipped him as a title favourite this season, but he since moved up to the Junior Max class and his season couldn’t be going much better.

It’s no secret that Joe, now with with KR Sport, is running on a slight budget, but that’s not hindered his performances as he sits 2nd in the championship just six points behind William Pettitt. On top of that he had an excellent opening round in the BNL Karting Series which has left him 3rd in the championship.

It may only be June, but I think there’s a good chance Joe will need to be booking himself some flights to Italy for the Rotax Grand Finals in October!

The East Anglian Cup will be running at Kimbolton this weekend.
