British duo Callum Ilott and Tom Joyner will mount a double attack on international KF racing this season for the Chiesa Corse squad after Ilott signed for the Italian outfit.
The 15-year-old has maintained an association with Chiesa Corse boss Dino Chiesa since he was 11 years old driving a Zanardi chassis on a privateer basis. Ilott will now officially join the team and link up with world KF champion Joyner at rounds of the CIK-FIA and WSK championships.
“Dino has called me many times,” said Ilott’s dad, Steve. “We’ve worked closely over the last few years and recently took the decision. Lance Stroll [Joyner’s former team-mate] has now graduated into cars for 2014 which has left a space alongside Tom and Callum was Dino’s number one target.
“Joyner is a world champion and a nice guy too. Both his and Dino’s experience and knowledge will hugely benefit Callum.”
The Hertfordshire-based youngster will also combine KZ gearbox running this season alongside his KF commitments and could make an appearance in British racing at some point.
“The international calendar will enable Callum to try some international KZ racing in the second half of this season,” he added.
“We will keep a watch over the Super One KZ1 championship with the view of possibly making an appearance too.
”Ilott Sr believes his son’s difficult 2013 season will benefit him this year. Ilott struggled in the opening stages of his maiden year in KF last season, before improving to claim the WSK Final Cup at Castelletto in November.
“Callum was at a young age to step up from KF Junior and it was tough,” he said. “He had such a successful 2012 in Juniors racing at the front and didn’t mix it in the pack.
“His speed was good but he lacked experience and was in the wrong places and the wrong time. He put both together in the second half of the year at it showed at Castelletto. That is a great sign for this year.”
