We were saddened to hear of the passing away on September 6th of Stan Owen at the ripe old age of 94. Having got over a broken hip Stan unfortunately contracted a chest infection while he was in hospital from which he did not recover. Stan started karting in the early 1960s and regularly competed in endurance races both in the UK and abroad, often teamed with his son Ken and with great success. He was certainly made of strong stuff as our report from the 1967 Caen 6 Hours highlights: “Stan Owen got a dislocated shoulder at the start of the race which meant that young Ken Owen had to do most of the driving single- handed, Stan doing the odd short session driving with one arm only, to let his son have a rest. ”And they won!
Son of an engineer, Stan’s first job was as a butcher’s boy but he was soon into engineering and ran his own tool-making business. He was a renowned kart engine tuner and rebuilder and also designed the Le Spectre kart. He will be fondly remembered by many in the karting community.
Stan is survived by his son Ken and daughter Pam.
