Thompson and Askey on IAME International Open Podium

Fusion Motorsport teammates Harry Thompson and Kai Askey were on good form at Castelletto last weekend with the pair finishing 2nd and 3rd at the IAME International Open in Junior X30! For Thompson, the result was arguably expected considering his form so far in European racing this year, but for Askey it came as a complete surprise. His first race abroad, his first race in the class and he is the youngest driver in the field at just 11 years of age! All of that and he beat some of Europe’s best Junior drivers!

This was no fluke for Askey either! He was 2nd overall in timed qualifying and put it on pole for final one with Harry Thompson qualifying 2nd. It was over the course of two finals how the winners would be decided, drivers would score points in each race and the drivers with the most points at the end would be champion!

Harry Thompson showed his determination to win in an interrupted opening final which was red flagged half way through. That bunched the pack together for the remaining few laps where Thompson was able to take victory from Ellie Goldstein who appeared to push Kai Askey wide on the last lap to take 2nd.

However, there was no such activity from Goldstein in race two with the Belgian cruising away to take victory by 1.7 seconds. After an unfortunate first final, which saw mechanical problems at the restart, Xavier Handsaeme did well to come through from 19th on the grid to 2nd. Thompson didn’t quite seem to have the same pace he had in race one and finished 3rd and after being pushed back at the start Askey did well to finish 6th place.

When the points were collated it was Goldstein who took victory by just four points from Thompson and Askey an impressive 3rd place! Further back Georgi Dimitrov did well to finish 12th after a disappointing qualifying.

X30 Senior

Taking victory in X30 Senior was Carlos Leon. The Spaniard has been a top X30 racer for a few years now and has experience at the Castelletto circuit. Carlos won the first final and even with a 4th in race two he took victory from the French drivers Joel Deputch and Milan Petelet.

In terms of the Brits Oliver Clarke was by far the best finishing 6th with Lorenzo Ferrari in 20th place.
