Round 5, 7th July – Whilton Mill
44 drivers competed in the July round of the Northampton Karting league (NKL) at the Whilton Mill Karting circuit.
After two heats each, drivers took part in either the A or B 10 lap final to score points for the league table. Garry West, currently third in the series standings, started the B Final in pole position and took a lights to flag victory.
The premier final was initially led by pole-sitter John Stanton but Jack McCauley and Elite Karting League Northampton driver Adam Wardiell from Kettering both took their turn at the top. On lap five Ronan McKenzie claimed the lead, setting the fastest race lap in the process, a feat he repeated on lap nine, holding onto the lead until he crossed the line over one second ahead of the rest. Wardiell and McCauley continued to battle for second and third spot with Wardiell timing his last-lap move to perfection to cross the line ahead. Garry West, who graduated from the B final stunning drive, started in 20th place and climbed up the order to finish in 8th place, a total gain of 12 places in just 10 laps.
League leader Connor Marsh from Northampton finished in fifth place, extending his lead over nearest rival Rich Ward who could only finish in tenth place.
The weighted category win went to Tom Butterworth from Northampton who finished in 6th place overall proving that in tricky conditions the heavier drivers can compete with their lighter rivals.
